Winter GBM A Success;
Big Events on the Horizon in 2013

We’re coming off the heels of what can only be described as a very successful 2013 Winter Governing Board Meeting. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet many of our association leaders and other members who were able to attend the weekend’s events.

The Hall of Fame Luncheon was great. I am impressed with the care South Texas takes to recognize those who have been stalwarts in the ongoing growth and development of this Association. It is also refreshing to see that those who were inducted in years past are still actively involved to this day.

I would like to thank our presenters and our vendors for their attendance. Mostly, I would like thank Tom Morrow and Christina Lambert for their momentous efforts to ensure the success of this event. They did an outstanding job in coordinating all aspects of this GBM. Additionally, thanks to support staff Denise, Imari, Mike and Evan for their assistance throughout the weekend. Each component helps to make the entire event more successful. We’re anxiously looking forward to the Summer GBM this July.

As a reminder, it is my goal to attend one meeting of every Association this calendar year. Please be sure to include me on any upcoming meeting notifications and I will surely make my best effort to appear, depending on availability. Many of you requested copies of the Power Point presentations that were utilized in several of the workshop sessions. We have these files available for download from the GBM information page of our web site, and in the lead story of this newsletter. Please be sure to visit those locations to download those files.

Looking ahead to 2013, we are working on a fundraiser for this fall which will include an appearance by Abby Wambach (U.S. Women’s National Team member, World Cup finalist and Olympic Gold Medalist). This event is scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 9th and 10th, in the Houston area. Her appearance will seek to raise funds to support South Texas’ TOPSoccer and Soccer Across America activities. More information on the specific date and time will be published once those details are confirmed.

My goodness, Major League Soccer’s 2013 season kicked off March 2nd. Congrats to our Houston Dynamo on a fantastic start, taking a 2-0 victory from D.C. United. Domestic league soccer is back in action, which once again this year includes women’s professional soccer. In addition, qualifying for the 2014 World Cup continues — the United States’ next match is scheduled for March 22. I am always willing to meet up with our members at the Austin-area official U.S. Soccer eatery to enjoy U.S. Soccer national team matches or other featured matches. We’re also trying to coordinate festivities with the Houston Dynamo and San Antonio Scorpions to further promote South Texas Youth Soccer.

The State Office is prepping for the Spring Cup competitions and for the Region III tournaments this summer. The spring soccer season is underway and we’re working hard to ensure a quality experience for all participants.Thank you to the club directors of coaching who participated in the March 6 conference call. Your input is valuable, and I am confident that Neal, myself and each of you will help move South Texas forward for the good of the game. Our staff is available to assist all of our members with your South Texas Soccer needs. Please contact us for assistance and support. We’re here for you!

For the good of the game,
Kelly R. Ross; Executive Director
South Texas Youth Soccer
