The STYSA 2010 Summer Governing Board Meeting wrapped up Sunday morning, July 18, after two days of meetings, workshops, coaching clinics and demonstrations, referee workshops, visits to the Soccer Expo vendor show, rule change discussions and the Annual Awards banquet.

Following a day-long series of workshops and visits to the vendors in the Soccer Expo, the delegates took a break to attend the Annual STYSA Awards Banquet to recognize the hard work and dedication of the people that make South Texas Youth Soccer tick — our volunteers.

Jessica Mickey of Victoria and Midge Van Es of Katy were named Youth Referees of the Year by their referee peers. Alyssa Makhani from Round Rock was selected Scholar Athlete of the Year. Brian Wode from Austin and Matthew Rivera from San Antonio were named Boys and Girls Coaches of the Year, respectively, and Tim Sonnier from Houston was named Volunteer of the Year. South Texas will nominate Brian and Matthew to US Youth Soccer for National Coach of the Year consideration.

Three outgoing Executive Committee Members were also recognized for their service — Chuck Jeffords (Western District Vice President); Polly Schueneman (Secretary) and Keith Walker (Eastern District Vice President.)

Please join me in congratulations of our 2010 award winners for their accomplishments, dedication, and efforts to advance youth soccer in South Texas!  On Sunday, the 82 Member Association delegates present approved the minutes of the Executive Committee meetings and Winter Governing Board meeting before turning their attention to debating the merits of the proposed rule changes submitted by the STYSA Member Associations and clubs. When the discussions and debates ended the member delegates had voted to approve nine of the 14 proposed changes. The delegates also approved the admission of Paso Del Norte Soccer Association as a Member Association and to return Carrizo Springs Youth Soccer back to active status.

STYSA semi-annual Governing Board Meetings are open to everyone and we encourage everyone interested in youth soccer to attend. Information about upcoming meetings can be found on the STYSA website under Governing Board Meetings.
