Three South Texas Teams Earn Region III President's Cup Titles

Houston Express 96G Navy earn runner-up finish at National Championships

South Texas teams were among the finest at June's US Youth Soccer Region III President's Cup Championships, combining for three regional titles — a total matched by just one of the other 12 states in Region III.

One of four regional President's Cup tournaments held nationwide, the Region III President's Cup Championships featured the State Cup champions and other qualifying teams from the 12 states that comprise Region III. Winning teams in the U14 through U17 age groups earned berths at the US Youth Soccer National President's Cup in Rock Hill, S.C., held in July.

The Under-15 boys TUFC Los Guerreros, Under-17 boys Texas United Westside and Under-16 girls Houston Express 96G Navy each rolled through their brackets at the Region III Championships, winning Regional titles and earning berths at the National Championships. Only one other state association — North Carolina — boasted as many champions, while only two more, Florida and North Texas, even managed to get three or more teams into finals.

The Houston Express 96G Navy team, coached by Mark Gibbs, wasn't finished, however. Houston Express went 2-0-1 in group play at Nationals to finish atop the group and earn a berth in the championship game against Cal-South's Platinum FC Cleary — a team they had already defeated once, 3-0, in their group-play opener. This time, however, it was Platinum FC's turn to hoist the hardware, winning a hard-fought, 1-0 game to capture the National title. Houston Express placed second, earning silver medals.

"This group of girls played their hearts out," said Houston Express Vice President and West U resident Adrian Crespo, in Instant News Bellaire. "They set the bar high for the rest of our teams and have given something tangible for all of the families and players that are part of HESC to dream about."

"The fact that this team made it to the National Championship speaks volumes of this group's commitment, dedication and talent," he said.
