Delegates to STYSA Winter Meeting Make Changes to Rules and Executive Committee

The STYSA 2011 Winter Governing Board Meeting, held in February, wrapped up two days of meetings, administrative workshops, referee workshops, coaching clinics and the vendor expo.

Friday evening was a time for renewing acquaintances and socializing with fellow soccer enthusiasts from around the state. Delegates checking in received their credentials and visited with the exhibitors before heading out to a variety of restaurants for a relaxing evening.

Presidents of the STYSA Member Associations or their alternate met with the Executive Committee to discuss the challenges currently facing each level of affiliation – lower participation numbers, increasing costs, competition from outside organizations and communication. Although issues in each area of the state differ slightly, the fundamental problems are the same for all of us. We must work together to promote soccer in our communities and join forces to make our programs strong and robust for players of every level of play.

Association and Club Registrars, who are charged with the responsibility of getting players signed up and placed onto the appropriate teams, met on Saturday. They discussed how to improve the process, shortcuts that would reduce the time requirements and offered recommendations on how to handle special situations.

Other workshops on the agenda included a review of the proposed rule changes, risk management issues, competitions, finance and budget, insurance, and website management. A special workshop on non-profit financial compliance was also presented for club and association Treasurers. This workshop will be repeated at the Summer GBM.

Eastern and Western District meetings were held late in the afternoon to provide delegates from those areas of the state an opportunity to review plans for the future and discuss upcoming competitions.

Sunday morning’s Governing Board Meeting moved along at a quick pace. Member Association delegates voted to approve the budget proposal for the 2011-2012 fiscal year and approved 2 of the 8 proposed rule changes. Committee and officer reports were presented before moving along to the election of officers.

Don Bohnet was elected to a second term as Executive Vice President; Shirley McGraw was re-elected as Registrar; and, Chuck Albores was re-elected as Treasurer.
